“Angels Among Us...
I was driving to school today with all of my “to do” items weighing heavily on my mind when I glanced at the license plate of the car in front of me. The license plate read, “There are angels among us”. That brief glance made the world of difference to my day. Just that small phrase of encouragement made what seemed to be impossible very easy. The license plate brought peace and contentment to my troubles. So remember any one of us can be an “angel” to another. In the worst of situations, always try to pass on kindness; you never know the difference you could be making! Open the door for the person in front of you. Let someone cut in front of you in line. Kindly say hello to a stranger. Be the solution to someone else’s struggle. “There are angels among us”!

Should We Allow Religion ...
The question of whether or not we should allow religion to be a part of our education system is one that is hotly debated, and both sides have received criticism. There is no cut and dry solution to this question, which we have been asking for quite some time now. For hundreds of years, religion was a staple in our schools. According to many people, an element of religion in our education system was what allowed for order to be kept. There are both pros and cons to this issue, and all sides of the issue have to be considered when determining whether or not we should allow religion in the schools. Pros There is concern that the Constitution’s freedom of religion has been replaced by freedom from religion by the United States Supreme Court. Banning religion from the schools is diminishing the religious freedom of the students that do want to pray or practice religion in school, which is denying them the freedom of religion that the Constitution guarantees them. Many argue that allowing prayer in school could result in a number of societal benefits. It is believed that the school system is disintegrating tragically, and the proof is all around us: School shootings, alcoholism, drug use, teen pregnancy and transmission of HIV for example. It is believed that allowing religion into the schools can help to combat these issues, instilling a true sense of morality into students which is needed to help these problems fade. Another benefit of allowing religion into schools is that it would allow for religious students the chance to observe their personal religious beliefs during a school day. People have an intrinsic religious nature that should be respected whether they are in school or anywhere else. Cons It is argued that prayer and religion in school are violating the First Amendment’s Establishment Claus, providing that the government cannot make any law that respects the establishment of any religion. Because public education is funded by the government, it is believed that incorporating it in schools would be promoting government-established religion. It is also argued that allowing school prayer or allowing church and religion into the school is violating the laws pertaining to the separation of church and state. Public schools are intended to provide education rather than theocratic education or religious observance. It is also argued that it is already legal for students to observe their religion on school grounds as long as they are praying on a voluntary basis and in a way that is not disruptive. What this means is that enacting formal school prayer is primarily unnecessary. It is also believed that forcing prayer is coercive by nature and can actually lead to intolerance and behavioral issues. The primary problem with allowing religion into the schools is that there is no way to create a single practice or prayer capable of honoring all religious tenets in the United States, nor denominational differences for that matter. Political Support The separation of church and state is largely political in nature. Much of the argument has to do with whether or not the government has a right to state whether or not religion can be brought to the schools. One of the largest political battles has related to praying in football games and other special events held by schools. Because there is no one single religion that everyone follows, there is no real way to bring religion into the school that would be agreeable among everyone, and this serves to cause problems. The only real way to bring religion into the school is to let each individual student practice how they like, provided that it is in a non-disruptive way. Public Support In the public eye, there are two clearly different sides of the situation. Many of those who follow a Christian religion feel that because our nation was founded “Under God”, that religion should be allowed in the schools. This is because if religion was brought into the schools, as it has been in the past, it would be a Christian religious denomination simply based on majority rules. Many of the people who are against the concept feel that because there are so many religious beliefs out there, there is no way to amicably bring religion into the schools without someone being left out or hurt. There is no clear cut answer to this question because there are two very clear sides to the issue….

Keeping Your Child Hydrated …...

During these hot months keeping your children hydrated is a must! Children need the appropriate fluids and it’s not always easy. Some children readily accept a glass of water, while others frown upon it …. What to do? Tips 1. Children should drink between 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. Additional fluids are needed before, during, and after sports or exercise. 2. A good rule of thumb, as recommended by pediatricians, is to drink half your body weight in ounces. i.e. If your child weighs 45 lbs., they should drink 23 ounces of water a day. 3. A child can be taught to recognize inadequate fluid intake by watching their potty. If their urine is concentrated deep yellow, cloudy, or smelly … they need more fluids. If their urine is pale or colorless and odorless they’re okay. 4. If water does not appeal to your child an easy way to get your child to drink water is by mixing equal parts of water and natural fruit juice. 5. Squeezing fresh lemon or orange in a glass of water is a great taste enhancer. 6. Frozen fresh fruit is another great way to add flavor to a plain glass of water. 7. If your child uses a drinking straw they will drink more and take bigger gulps. 8. Make water readily available. Place a pitcher of water or bottles of water in the refrigerator for easy access. 9. Set a good example and drink water yourself.   Why 1. If your body does not have the appropriate amount of fluid, it becomes dehydrated and is unable to perform at its best. 2. When a child is dehydrated they can become irritable, tired, and unable to concentrate. Sometimes they may even experience headaches. 3. The brain is made up of 80% water; poor fluid intake does adversely affect learning. 4. Water helps manage body temperature and transport nutrients throughout the body. 5. Water helps the body cleanse itself of toxins. As I tell my own children … Drink water and wash away the yuckies, just like taking a bath to wash away the dirt. Keep Hydrated and Blessings!

One Nation, One World, One Race …....

…. Ever notice that it’s becoming more difficult to turn on the news and pick up the Sunday paper. Everything seems to be filled with crime, hardship, and despair. Humanity seems to be taking a plunge for the worst. Rarely do we hear positive happenings but rather the beginning of mankind turning on itself. As an educator, role model, and mother it seems to more and more difficult to instill important values within our children. So I beg of you stand strong in your beliefs and heritage. Lead by example! Teach our children to be proud of their heritage and values. Teach them to not only respect their beliefs and history but also to respect the background of others. Teach our children to listen, be kind to others, and respect our differences. As Andy Rooney says …. I don’t believe in Santa Claus, but I’m not going to sue somebody for singing a Ho-Ho-Ho song in December. I don’t agree with Darwin, but I didn’t go out and hire a lawyer when my high school teacher taught his Theory of Evolution. Life, liberty or your pursuit of happiness will not be endangered because someone says a 30-second prayer before a football game. So what’s the big deal? It’s not like somebody is up there reading the entire Book of Acts. They’re just talking to a God they believe in and asking him to grant safety to the players on the field and the fans going home from the game. But it’s a Christian prayer, some will argue. Yes, and this is the United States of America, a country founded on Christian principles. According to our very own phone book, Christian churches outnumber all others better than 200-to-1. So what would you expect — somebody chanting Hare Krishna? If I went to a football game in Jerusalem, I would expect to hear a Jewish prayer… If I went to a soccer game in Baghdad, I would expect to hear a Muslim prayer. If I went to a ping pong match in China, I would expect to hear someone pray to Buddha. And I wouldn’t be offended… It wouldn’t bother me one bit. “When in Rome…..” But what about the atheists? Is another argument. What about them? Nobody is asking them to be baptized. We’re not going to pass the collection plate. Just humor us for 30 seconds. If that’s asking too much, bring a Walkman or a pair of ear plugs. Go to the bathroom. Visit the concession stand. Call your lawyer! Unfortunately, one or two will make that call. One or two will tell thousands what they can and cannot do. I don’t think a short prayer at a football game is going to shake the world’s foundations. Christians are just sick and tired of turning the other cheek while our courts strip us of all our rights. Our parents and grandparents taught us to pray before eating, to pray before we go to sleep. Our Bible tells us to pray without ceasing. Now a handful of people and their Lawyers are telling us to cease praying. God, help us. And if that last sentence offends you, well, just sue me. The silent majority has been silent too long. It’s time we tell that one or two who scream loud enough to be heard that the vast majority doesn’t care what they want. It is time that the majority Rules! It’s time we tell them, you don’t have to pray; you don’t have to say the Pledge of Allegiance; you don’t have to believe in God or attend services that honor Him. That is your right, and we will honor your right; but by golly, you are no longer going to take our rights away. We are fighting back, and we WILL WIN! God bless us one and all … Especially those who denounce Him, God bless America, despite all her faults. She is still the greatest nation of all. God bless our service men that are fighting to protect our right to pray and worship God. Put some thought into these words …. Whether you’re Catholic, Christian, Atheist, or of other origin; green, blue, or pink …. Respect each other’s history and differences. Be kind to one another on every occasion! Let’s stop fighting each other and work as one! Blessings!
